Janmulleripollis, a new pollen genus from the Eocene of Venezuela

Abstract

A new pollen genus, Janmulleripollis de Di Giacomo & van Erve, characterized by the presence of 5 – 6 colpi which are interconnected at the poles, is described from the Eocene of Venezuela. The genus is named after Dr. Jan Muller, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the palynology of Venezuela.

A Palynological Zonation for the Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary of Northern South Americ

Abstract

The present paper deals with the stratigraphic distribution of sporomorphs in the Cretaceous to Recent sediments from Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, Guyana, Surinam and Brazil. This stratigraphic interval is subdivided into ten superzones (six Cretaceous and four Tertiary/Quaternary), and 31 zones (13 Cretaceous and 18 Tertiary/Quaternary). Special emphasis is given to the subdivision of the Eocene sequence in Venezuela into eight zones. The proposed zonal scheme is considered to be applicable throughout northern South America. A correlation with other zonations in use in the same area is presented.

Three new form genera are formally erected: Echidiporites (typified by E. barbeitoensis sp. nov.), Maravenites (typified by M. polyoratus sp. nov.), and Venezuelites (typified by V. globoannulatus sp. nov’:1.

In addition, 15 new species are proposed: Bombacacidites baculatus sp. nov., B. foveoreticulatus sp. nov., B. soleaformis sp. nov., B. ciriloensis sp. nov., Clavamonocolpites lorentei sp. nov., Cl. microclavatus sp. nov., Echitricolporites maristellae sp. nov. , Gemmamonocolpites macrogemmatus sp. nov., Laevigatosporites catanejensis sp. nov. ,. Proxapertites magnus sp. nov., P. maracaiboensis sp. nov., Psilatricolporites caribbiensis sp. nov., Spinizonocolpites intrarugulatus sp. nov., Stephanocolpites evansii sp. nov., and Wilsonipites margocolpatus sp. nov.

Moreover, emended diagnoses of Clavamonocolpites Gonzalez Guzman, 1967, Psilaperiporites Regali et al., 1974, Spinizonocolpites Muller 1968, and Psilaperiporites robustus Regali et al., 1974 are presented.

The following taxonomic combination is proposed: Bombacacidites brevis (Duenas, 1979) comb. nov.
