Description

Terms that have been applied in morphologic descriptions of dinoflagellate amphiesmae and cysts, acritarchs and prasinophytes are listed alphabetically. The definitions are taken from the originating author(s), where possible, and from subsequent papers that provide meaningful definitions. Only where there is no alternative, do the authors provide their own definition. Where possible, terms are illustrated and synonyms or related terms listed. Acritarchs and prasinophytes are also organic-walled microplankton occurring in the same palynological preparation with dinoflagellates. Consequently, the three groups – dinoflagellates, acritarchs and prasinophytes – are conveniently treated together. Also included are some terms which are applicable to the dinoflagellate cell contents: examples are nucleus and ocellus.
